I'm a big fan of the Golf, to the point that I'm considering one as my next car.
Having spoken to a few guys at work who have them as fleet vehicles, the biggest letdown in the cheaper models previously is the distinct lack of internal substance. The baseline model is **very** basic inside.
I believe that VW have fixed this recently with their Pacific version
While the DSG (in Auto) sounds fantastic - I'm told it can be flakey
