I tried eating vegetarian. I feel like a wimp going into a restaurant. "What do you want to eat sir? Brocolli?" Brocolli's a side dish, folks. Always was, always will be, ok? When they ask me what I want, I say, "What do you think I want!? This is America. I want a bowl of raw red meat right now. Forget about that. Bring me a live cow over to the table. I'll carve off what I want and ride the rest home!

This, my friends, is supper. I love brocolli! So shoot me. 5 October 2004, 8:05 p.m.

my favourite magazine again
Phlog photo

What am I reading (or looking at)? That\'s page 28 of National Geographic for October which just arrived today, and they\'re fishermen from Tyre in Lebanon. My eyes are drawn to top row, number 2 from the left. He and the others on this page have agreed to donate blood samples for a study that will determine whether they\'re descended from the ancient Phoenicians (one specimen shown on the right: yellow, pointy head, bulgy eyes ...).

Or rain in Wakatu Drive. That\'s somewhere near where I live if you wish to know. [Btw, is it that bad over Philly?]

We're poor little lambs who've lost our way,
Baa! Baa! Baa!
We're little black sheep who've gone astray,
Baa--aa--aa!

Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), Gentlemen Rankers

This lamb is only 2 days old but is already pretty aggressive, stamping its feet at me (which is a sheep's way of saying "back off!"). I guess I wouldn't be too happy too if someone took a photo of me without my permission...

Hehe, the peace prize this year went to Daisuke Inoue of Hyogo, Japan, for inventing karaoke, \"thereby providing an entirely new way for people to learn to tolerate each other\". ...

Ok, from the BBC: Researchers who patented a comb-over hairstyle in 1975 were top prize winners in the engineering section of this year\'s Ig Nobel awards.

Father and son team Frank and Donald Smith developed a method to cover partial baldness using only the individual\'s own hair.

Award organisers, the Annals of Improbable Research publishers, say the Igs are meant to celebrate the unusual.

They also aim to encourage interest in science, medicine, and technology.

This year\'s prizes were awarded at a sell-out gala ceremony at Harvard University in Massachusetts and the prizes were handed to the winners by genuine Nobel Laureates.

Now there\'s a BIG book if you want one for your coffee table. It\'s Leonardo da Vinci: The Complete Paintings and Drawings (by Taschen publishers). It\'s a superb paperweight (or doorstop) and the price tag is just as heavy ($NZ450, cheaper through Amazon but you pay the same amount again for freight ;)!). That\'s the Unknown Woman staring back at me (the old Da Vinci seemed to have a long list of unknown women!), the original is at Le Musée du Louvre (Portrait of an Unknown Woman (La Belle Ferronière), c. 1490-1495, oil on walnut, 63 x 45 cm.

stardust
Phlog photo

Life begins with the process of star formation. We are made of stardust. Every atom of every element in your body except for hydrogen has been manufactured inside stars, scattered across the Universe in great stellar explosions, and recycled to become part of you. The hydrogen is primordial material, produced in the Big Bang, along with helium (there is no helium in your body). Hydrogen and helium together formed the raw material for the first generation of stars, some 12 billion years ago, but everything else has been built up by nuclear fusion in stellar furnaces.
